MULTILINGUALISM DAY

Multilingualism is at the heart of the European Parliament and makes it possible for you to be part of the debate in any of the 24 official languages. Every year we celebrate this commitment with a day of special events that shine a spotlight on interpreting and translation.

This year, September 26th, Multilingualism Day will be held online with a live broadcast from the Hemicycle plenary and debating chamber, with sessions on what it is like to be a translator or an interpreter and on the European Parliament’s commitment to languages.

Peek behind the curtain and see how the European Parliament works in 24 languages. Watch online and take part in virtual workshops (registration) to meet interpreters and translators, see if there could be a career in languages for you and learn about how languages have shaped Europe.

We will be hosting online workshops, where you can address your questions directly to the interpreters and translators who make multilingualism a reality.

Multilingualism is rooted in the European treaties and reflects European cultural and linguistic diversity. Today all 24 official EU languages are used in the European Parliament daily. Each Member of European Parliament has the right to read and write parliamentary documents, follow debates and speak in his or her own language. As well as all EU citizens have the right to get information about the union, its decision making processes and laws in the language of their own country. All official languages are equally important.

Cultural and linguistic diversity and the values and goals of the EU can be seen in our everyday life. EU is not someone and somewhere, we are the EU.
